Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is a treatment method used to demonstrate and train the proper placement and function of the tongue and facial muscles used semi-passively (while resting and breathing) and actively (speaking and swallowing). OMT has been shown to help with speech sound disorders, sleep apnea, bruxism (teeth clenching), TMJ disorders, migraines, ear ringing (tinnitus) and poor posture due to head and neck position.
Proper tongue positioning is critical for optimal nasal breathing; deep restful sleep; proper jaw and dental growth and development; correct swallowing patterns, eliminating tongue thrusting that will impact how well teeth line up.
The benefits of OMT are considerable: better sleep; more attractive facial tone and appearance; elimination of noxious habits like thumb sucking, pacifier use, and tongue sucking, clearer speech; decreased muscular tension, elimination of headaches and ear ringing; improved attention; and even reduced grouchiness!
